About This Event

Welcome to the Cystads Traditional Trade Fair 2026

The Cystads Traditional Trade Fair 2026 is a landmark five-day cultural and commercial celebration hosted at the prestigious University of Ibadan, Faculty of Arts. This inaugural event brings together artisans, traders, cultural enthusiasts, students, researchers, and heritage advocates from across Africa and the diaspora — united by a shared passion for African tradition, creativity, and commerce.

This is more than a marketplace. It is a living museum, a networking hub, and a celebration of the richness that African culture carries into the modern world.

🎯 What is the Trade Fair About?

The Cystads Traditional Trade Fair is designed to bridge the gap between African cultural heritage and modern economic opportunity. We believe that tradition is not a relic — it is a living, breathing, commercially viable force. From hand-woven fabrics to indigenous culinary arts, from oral literature to digital storytelling, the fair showcases the full spectrum of what African tradition has to offer the 21st century.

✨ What to Expect

  • Traditional Artisan Market — Browse and purchase directly from skilled craftspeople: weavers, carvers, potters, jewellers, leatherworkers, and textile artists from across the continent.
  • Cultural Performances — Daily live performances including traditional dance, drumming, spoken word poetry, and theatrical storytelling from Nigerian and West African groups.
  • Academic Panels & Symposia — Thought-provoking discussions hosted by scholars, cultural practitioners, and industry leaders on the intersection of African heritage and modern innovation.
  • Food Village — A curated street food court celebrating indigenous Nigerian and pan-African cuisine — from tuwo shinkafa and ofe akwu to jollof rice cooked the authentic way.
  • Heritage Exhibition Hall — A curated display of cultural artefacts, historical photographs, manuscripts, and oral history recordings celebrating Yoruba and pan-African traditions.
  • Student Innovation Showcase — University of Ibadan students and young entrepreneurs present projects, start-ups, and research that draw inspiration from African cultural heritage.
  • Traditional Fashion Show — A runway event celebrating African fashion designers who blend traditional fabrics (aso-oke, adire, ankara, kente) with contemporary silhouettes.
  • Live Music Evenings — Each evening closes with live music performances spotlighting afrobeats, highlife, fuji, and traditional folk music.
